FAQ
1. What do I need to create a company in the UK?
- A unique company name. Use the search tool on Companies House here to check if your company name is available.
- Personal information. You’ll be asked to provide some personal details like your address, date of birth, and nationality.
- A registered office address - this must be an address that mail can be received at and forwarded from. If you aren’t based in the UK you can use a friend or family member’s address, but an office address is ideal. If you are in the UK you can use your home address or your business address (if you have a separate trading address). You can also use a virtual business address if you have one, if you don’t have one we offer one when you register your UK company using the wamo service.
2. How much does it cost to set up a UK company with wamo?
- The registration process with wamo costs £99. This includes all the processing once you have applied and posting your company registration certificate to you when it’s ready.
3. Are there restrictions as to who can set up a limited company in the UK?
- In theory anyone can apply to set up a limited company in the UK, as long as your identity can be verified, you have a business address in the UK and can provide all the documents needed.
- It is worth reading through the Companies House guidelines about whether creating a limited company is right for your business, here.
4. Do I have to be in the UK to register my new UK company?
- No, you can do it all using the wamo mobile or desktop app. Your company must have at least one director who is over 16 years old and not in any way disqualified from being a director - your director does not need to be resident in the UK.
5. What is a virtual office address?
- A virtual office is, in fact, a real office space with a real address that you pay a monthly fee to use as your registered business address. You can add this address to your website, use it to receive and send mail and on documents whenever your business address is required.
6. Can I change my registered office address later?
- Yes, although we can’t make this change once you have submitted your application but you can change your address relatively easily by contacting Companies House directly.
7. Is it a requirement that I register my company for VAT?
- Only if your turnover exceeds £85,000 (the VAT threshold). There are advantages to registering for VAT even if your company turnover comes in under the threshold though. Take a look at gov.uk website to find out more.
8. Do I have to have LTD at the end of my company name?
Yes, you have to have either Limited or LTD at the end of your company name. This is a requirement by Companies House.
There is no difference between LTD and Limited, LTD is just the shortened version. Companies House requires limited companies to have one or the other at the end of the company name.
9. Can I set up other types of business, like an LLP, 'Community Interest Company' or a charity?
At the moment it is only possible to create a limited company, limited by shares.
